Understanding Mesothelioma
The most common type of Mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which occurs in the outer lining of the lungs and the internal chest wall. As a form of lung cancer, this disease causes a number of common symptoms, including shortness of breath (due to fluid between the lung and chest wall), chest pain, persistent cough, blood in coughed-up fluid, wheezing, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, fatigue, anemia, and fever.
Symptoms may not appear until 30 to 70 years after exposure to asbestos. The only known cause of the disease is long-term exposure to asbestos.
"What Is Asbestos?"
Asbestos is a fibrous, flame-retardant material often used for insulation, which made it popular in construction for nearly all of the 20th century. Shipyards were a common place for exposure, for example, and the material was used for turbines, engines, pipes, fire doors, and bulkheads.
Asbestos was also common in:
- Insulation
- Cement
- Roofing shingles
- Ceiling tiles
- Floor tiles
- Paint and siding
Today, asbestos is still being used by industries and in products. Each year, about 3,000 people develop Mesothelioma from breathing asbestos dust and fibers. These particles become lodged in our lung tissue and promote the growth of irregular cells that can develop into cancer.
Navigating Your Mesothelioma Claim
The value of your case depends upon a number of factors, including the type(s) of asbestos products to which you were exposed to, whether the manufacturer is still in operation, and when the exposure occurred (the statute of limitations may be an issue).
